The employee experience has moved from the periphery of organizational strategy to its center — not because organizations have become more altruistic, but because the evidence connecting it to business performance has become impossible to ignore. Gallup’s 2023 State of the Global Workplace report found that organizations with high employee engagement outperform competitors by 21% in profitability and 17% in productivity (Gallup, 2023).

Well-being and productivity are connected

Research from the University of Oxford found that happy employees are 13% more productive — and the relationship holds even after controlling for other factors (De Neve & Ward, 2017). Employees who feel well-supported are more engaged, invest more effort, persist longer through difficulty, and are more likely to go beyond their formal job requirements. They also take fewer sick days and are less likely to leave.

Recognition as a retention tool

McKinsey’s research on employee attrition found that the most commonly cited reason employees leave is not compensation — it is that they do not feel valued by their organization (McKinsey, 2022). Recognition does not require large investments. It requires attention: to what people are contributing, to the challenges they are navigating, and to the gap between what employees experience and what leadership believes they experience.

Growth and learning

LinkedIn’s 2023 Workplace Learning Report found that 94% of employees would stay longer at organizations that genuinely invested in their development (LinkedIn, 2023). What employees mean by “genuine investment” varies — formal training programs for some, challenging projects and honest feedback for others. The common thread is that the organization takes their development seriously.

Flexibility as expectation, not perk

The framing of workplace flexibility as a benefit has become outdated. McKinsey found that 87% of employees will take a flexible work option when offered one, and organizations with flexible arrangements show substantially better retention (McKinsey, 2022). Flexibility is not what makes an organization exceptional anymore. Its absence is what makes an organization uncompetitive.
